Chronicle (***1/2), 20th Century Fox, Dir: Josh Trank, Str: Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan
The Craft with dudes meets shaky cam Superman in this surprisingly entertaining teen super hero flick from first time director Josh Trank. Three pals (one popular, one smart, one troubled) find some sort of glowing geode in a hole in the ground and soon find that they’ve gained the power of telekinesis. The real strength of Chronicle, both the actors and the filmmakers, is in it’s ability to make the three friends seem like real teenagers doing the really foolish stuff and making the very poor decisions that three people their age would probably do if they could suddenly move things with their mind. The film has some hints of depth but opts instead for lunacy in it’s final act, which probably doesn’t serve the story but was done with enough skill and style to keep me entertained.
